Pedro Hispano.
Pedro Hispano (1215-1277) was born
in Lisbon as Petrus Juliani. He studied medicine in Paris and became professor
of medicine at Siena University
in Italy. He had a special interest in ophthalmology and wrote a book on
ophthalmology
Liber de Oculo.
From 1272 to 1275, he served as the bishop of Braga in the Northern Portugal.
In 1276, he became the
first Portuguese pope and took
the name of Pope Johannes XXI.
