‘‘Foresight Prevents Blindness’’ was the theme of World Health Day on 7 April 1976. Several countries issued stamps to mark the occasion. The theme was adopted because the majority of blindness in the world is preventable. According to the World Bank’s World development report of 1993 there were an estimated 38 million blind persons and 110 million visually impaired worldwide. Of this blindness, 80% is avoidable (caused by malnutrition, trachoma, river blindness)  while 90% of the burden it represents is borne by developing countries.
