Johann Wolfgang Goethe (1749-1832) is best known as one of the great German literary figure. He was
also a statesman, diplomat and scientist. As a scientist he was interested in colour vision. He published 
a treatise on colour vision in 1810 entitled Zur Farbenlehre. In this work, he dealt with the effect of 
colour on men especially its aesthetic effect and introduced the concept of polarity of colour and colour 
increment. His work also contained the history of the development of colour theories.
