Visual screening of the newborn
allows early detection of potentially blinding conditions. One of the test
is to look for the presence of
red reflex. Its absence may indicate cataract or more seriously retinoblastoma.
Retinopathy of prematurity results
from attempted vascularization of the peripheral retina. Although many
factors have been implicated, the
most consistent risk factors for ROP are low birth weight and degree of
prematurity. Lengths of time in
oxygen and with mechanical ventilation have also been correlated with the
development of ROP, but no correlation
could be established with levels of oxygen saturation, as measured
directly or transcutaneously.
