Principles of eyelid reconstruction:
Full thickness upper lid reconstruction
f
The upper lid is functionally more important than the lower lid in maintaining the integrity of the cornea.

The repair of the upper lid follows the same principles as of the lower lids.

However, unlike the lower lids, there are some important strucutres in the upper lids that need special attention to avoid complication or undesirable results:

  • the lacrimal ductules in the lateral aspect of the eye may be damaged if there is excessive manipulation of the fornix.
  • the levator function may be impaired if the upper lid is left in tension
The techniques required for upper lid full thickness defect depends on the extents of the defect.
