What does this CT scan show?
Answer
The scan shows a lesion in the left lacrimal fossa
with thinning of the adjacent orbital wall.
The scan suggests the lesion is long-standing (bony
erosion).
Is biopsy recommended?
Answer
If pleomorphic adenoma is suspected then biopsy
is not recommended. Biopsy can cause breach of
the capsule causing incomplete excision and
recurrence. There is also a small risk of
malignant transformation with incomplete
excision. The management of choice is
en bloc excision using lateral orbitotomy.
