The Blinding of Samson by the Philistines from the Bible by Rembrandt 1636. |
|||
Samson was a Hebrew warrior born
with unusual strength. He defended his homeland against the invading Philistines.
The secret of his strength lies in his hair which was never cut since birth. The secret was discovered by Delilah sent by the Philistines to seduce him. When she cut off Samson's hair (in the background of the picture), his strength was lost. He was blinded and imprisoned by the Philistines. He was chained to a temple but in his final show of strength he pulled down the building himself and many of his enemies. |
