Optic disc pit
 

There is a focal depression on the temporal aspect of the optic disc. The appearance is that of an optic disc pit. Look for: pigmentary changes in the macula indicating previous central serous retinopathy.

1. What is the significance of an optic disc pit?

Answer
The most important is the development of serous detachment which affects about 50% of the patients.
The other being the presence of visual field defect which may be confused with glaucoma such as
enlarged blind spot and arcuate scotoma.

2. Is treatment ever indicated in optic disc pit?

Answer
Treatment is indicated in  patient with persistent central serous detachment.
The treatment include:
laser photocoagulation along the temporal disc margin
vitrectomy with gas tamponade.
