Bergmeister's papillae
 

There is a small stalk of fibrous tissue arising from the optic disc and  terminates in the mid vitreous. Other signs: Look for Mittendorf's dot behind the lens. This is the anterior  remnant of the hyaloid system.

Answer
It results from a failure of absorption of the hyaloid artery before birth. Bergmeister's papillae represents the posterior remnant of the hyaloid artery.

2. What is the significance of Bergmeister's papillae?

Answer
It is usually an incidental finding and has no visual significance.
