Funk proved that vitamin B1 defiency causes beri-beri. In the wet form, beri-beri 
causes congestive cardiac failure. In the dry form it causes neuropathy including
optic neuropathy, Wernicke's encephalopathy and Korsakoff's encephalopathy.
