St. Francis of Assisi (1182-1226) founded the Christian religious group of Franciscan in 1209. He severed
his link from his wealthy family and took on poverty to preach to the poor. In his later year he suffered 
from a number of diseases possibly caused by continuous starvation. He had continuous watering and 
poor vision caused by trachoma. He underwent several primitive and cruel treatment without success 
amongst which: cauterization to both eyes; cutting of veins from the ears to the eyebrows and perforation 
of the eardrums.
