Valverde Rodolfo Robles (1878-1939) was born in Guantemala and obtained his medical degree in Paris in 1900. Upon his return, the chief of gynecology and the professor of anatomy in Guantemala. His study on patients with river blindness (outside West Africa, the disease is also found in pockets of Latin America) led to the discovery that the disease is caused by filaria volvulus. The disease is also called 'Robles disease'.
