Chillies contain the pungent ingredient capsaicin which is used as a counter irritants in
treating post-herpetic neuralgia. It also has the additional effects of depleting substance P,
a pain neurotransmitter in peripheral sensory neurones. Care should be taken not to get it
into the sensitive conjunctiva. Capsaicin is also an ingredient in tear gas.
