Uruguay (1997 SG2371) 100th Anniversary of synthesis of acetylsalicylic acid.
Colombia (1997) 100th Anniversary of the introduction of aspirin pill.

The acetylsalicylic acid produced by von Gerhardt was unstable and impure. Felix Hoffman, a German chemist
working for the Bayer Company modified the technique of von Gerhardt and successfully synthesized a pure
and stable form of acetylsalicylic acid in 1897. This was introduced into the clinical practice as Aspirin by
the Bayer Company in 1899.
