Nicot (1530-1600).
The latin name for the tobacco plant
is Nicotiana tabacum. Nicotiana is named after the French ambassador
to Portugal Jean Nicot who popularized tobacco by claiming its medicinal
benefits. The word cigarette and cigar are derived from the Spanish word
cigarro (cicada) because when tobacco was first introduced to Europe,
the leaves were smoked by rolling them into cylindrical shape resembling
the insect cicada.
