Amanita muscaria or fly mushroom contains the alkaloid muscarine. Its extract was used to kill insects. In Siberia, it was used to make intoxicating drinks. When applied topically, muscarine causes paralysis of accommodation, miosis and increases lacrimation. However, it is difficult to extract muscarine from the fungi in pure forms and it is not used therapeutically.
