The latin name for poppy is papaver somniferum. The word somniferum means bringing to sleep. As the name implies, the derivative of poppy opium has been used for centuries to relieve pain and induce sleep. Opium is obtained from the unripe seed capsule (pod) of the head of the poppy plant.
