Unprotected exposure to welding arc results in inflammation to the cornea and conjunctiva.
The damage results from exposure to ultraviolet light. 4-8 hours after exposure, the patient
experiences a marked sandy feeling in the eye, lacrimation, photophobia, blepharospasm
and congestion of the conjunctiva and eyelid swelling. The condition is usually self-limiting
and heals within 48 hours. Firm patching and analgesia are the treatment of choice.
