Ophthalmic stamps from around the world
A stamp issued by Italy in 2004 to commemorate the 40th Anniversary of the formation of Lega del Filo D'oro (The League of the Golden Thread). The Society was founded in 1964 by Sabina Santilli to improve the life of the blind-deaf children and adults. The picture in the stamp shows hands touching each other during the process of communicating using the Malossi alphabet, a communication system devised for those who can not hear and see.

In Malossi communication different parts of the hand correspond to different alphabets and by gently touching (black letters) and pinching (blue letters), the hand becomes a kind of typewriter for the person receiving the message. It is an effective way for communication who had learnt to read and write before going blind and deaf as in Usher's syndrome.
