Diego Rodriguez de Silva Velazquez (1599 - 1660), Spanish painter. He was
appointed as court painter to Philip IV in 1623, he painted many notable
portraits painting which humanized the stiff and formal Spanish tradition
of idealized figures which tended towards naturalness and simplicity. This
painting, Las Meninas, shows the scene of the Spanish court. At the background
is a curious mirror picture showing the reflection of the painter but how
