Mirror, Mirror on the Wall

Edouard Manet (1832-83), French painter. His realist approach greatly influenced the impressionists. He abandoned half tones and shading in favour of pure colour to give a direct unsentimental effect. Several of his paintings aroused outrage because of his frank treatment of the subject matter. One of his controversial masterpiece is Olympia (1865) in which he depicts a nude woman with clear indication that she was a prostitute.
